Well, a soon-to-be new player, as I'm in the US and just ordered my copy of the game from Warlord last night! And while I'm waiting for it to get here, I was wanting to start shopping for figures. But until my copy of the book gets here, it's kind of hard to figure what to look for. Can you good folk recommend/guide me on sort of basically what would make a good 'stable' of minis for putting on a representative mix of scenarios?

Here's what I think I understand as needful:

-one or more Witchfinders
-several 'boss villains' - eg vampire lord, head witch, sorcerer
-some villain beasts - hellhounds/barghests, werewolves, ???
-some normal people - clubmen, guard/military, civilians - presumably some can be dual-purposed as either working for the Witchfinder or being dupes of the villians
-evil 'grunts' - ghouls/noctilegers, low-ranking members of the cult or coven, ???

Is this sort of thing what I should be looking for? Are there other character types I should add to this list?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

EDIT: I also meant to ask what would be good numbers for some of these things - 10-20 for 'mortals,' and maybe 2-5 of stuff like ghouls, witches, barghests, etc?

Hi Flint,

I have just got the book a week ago and am having fun just looking through my spare models and putting things aside to start making 2 groups. you cannot go wrong if you start to gather models for the following;

1 Witchfinder on foot
20 Muskets (split good n bad)
10 Pike (split good n bad)
6 walking dead/nochtlinger
6 evil dogs/barguest
10+ armed civillians with various weapons/clubmen

this will give you plenty to have a go at some of the scenarios and make some of your own.

other models to look out for are;

vampires, witches, werewolves, mounted pistoliers and dragoons, villagers, cannon and any other griblies that you think could be fun to paint and game with.

Dave,

Excellent, this is just what I needed! Thanks for the breakdown, that should be enough for me to start my shopping.

Thanks again!

A follow-up: I'm looking very hard at getting the Warlord English Starter Army box, which builds 24 pike, 48 muskets, 10 flintlock guys and 24 cavalry AND comes with a saker cannon. It's a bit more than I need, but I can probably either give some spare guys to other people to start their collections (hopefully!) or could even build a third faction of mortal troops.

My problem is that I'm not entirely sure about the contents of this set and how fitting they will be for this historical setting. Chronologically it seems like the right timeframe, but I wasn't sure if these guys were too well armed/regimented looking for this setting?

Also, it looks like you get multiple options on the frames for making Royalists/Covenanters/etc by switching heads, hats, etc - is that correct?

At the moment I'm looking at grabbing that and a box or two of Clubmen militia, and then all I need is my Big guys and monsters.

Hi Flintlock,

Welcome to the world of folklore wargaming
One of the great things I've found with this game is you can play
with what ever you've got. No army lists, points or codex, just build a game and have fun with the suggestion you play the game both ways.
I've played on a small table (3'x2') with as little as 6 figures each and also on standard 6'x4'with around 15-20 figures each. #
I too prior to buying these rules had no ecw stuff or other beasties

have fun

Flint,

Those warlord figures are just the job for this game. The sculpts are great with loads of options on the frames.

Ref how they look, this can be done with a choice of colours and how you paint them to give them either a full regemented look or a more drab and varied colour scheme.

Numbers wise in the set seems way more than you would need unless building up to have some very large games later. But if you are getting others interested in the game then the extra figure will do you no wrong.

EDIT.......

Also an interesting point (please correct me if I am wrong) the basing is sugested in the book but as there is no need for ranking up regiments and the working out of how many models are in base contact then there is scope for you to get creative with your base size/shape to get more atmosphere for your models.

I have also spotted that there are some nice models for peasant women with children that I need to go back and find that would work great for this game. Just need to remember who makes them.

I am also going to use some GW free company figures to make some villigers/clubmen as the set comes with lots of options for weapons an a large variety of clothes.

good luck

dave.

Hi Flintlock and welcome. You won't be disappointed by the rules!

Regarding the bases, the reason for the suggested basing system in the book (ECW and 30 Years War) will be because many players will already have figures based that way for other games. Also, square bases make it easier for determining a figure's facing. Personally, I didn't have any ECW type figures before this and most of the suitable "Evil" ones I have are based on the 30mm round lipped bases, so I decided to stick with that. It wouldn't really make a deal of difference if I came up against an opponent using square bases because common sense or "gumption" (love that word!)allows players to do such things. Just get out and play!!

Checkout the figures from The Redoubt for civilians! Really nice. They also have a nice range for the Three Musketeers, which would fit in nicely too!

Thanks sarge, Dave, BigAl! I agree that the army box is just way more figs than I can use, but I found it for a ridiculously low price and thought having extra figs couldn't hurt. Next I'm ordering some of the really great Outpost Wargames Highwaymen to be witchunters, the local squire whose actually a warlock, etc. After that I'll put together a roster of more 'over the top' bad guys - have been looking at Reaper and Heresy for devils, werewolves, demon dogs and the like.

I do have another question, while I'm on a roll - can anyone recommend some good witch figures that don't have the stereotypical pointy hat? It just doesn't really have the right connotation for me; I'd like some witches that are in more 'everyday' dress but still carrying staves or gesturing wildly, or something.

Thanks again to everyone for the kind welcome!
