This is a thread to see if we can bully Eric into coming up with his own line of witchfinder models because there just aren't enough good ones out there. Fair enough there are loads of gribblies but it's very hard to find a decent non-fantasy witchfinder. If you want 'em join in the campaign by posting your demands below 
Aside from a proper Stickler, I personally would like to see a period vampire model to represent Schubert. Heresy's does an admirable job but it isn't quite 17th century enough.
On a more serious note, if you (Eric) were interested in forming some kind of collaboration with an existing small mini company to get couple of figures commissioned and into production I have several contacts I can approach.

You have started a very intriguing thread Mr Undave and thanks gents for the links to some good figures too. I have thought about the pros and cons of commissioning the production of a small line of figures to support the game Mr Undave and I am interested. I must admit that although I have tried sculpting , unless anyone is interested in buying 'Witchfinder Morph' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Morph-NMM-Bradford.jpg, I would need the help and expertise of a mini company to do this. Yes it can be very expensive to get your own figure done purely for you to sell but that wasn't quite what I had in mind to suggest. Reading back I don't think I explained all that clearly what I'm on about. I'll take up the production side discussion with Eric if he's interested and it may never come to anything in any case. I may have enough influence over certain small manufacturers to be able to put the idea into their heads but then again they may not go for it.
As for the figures themselves I agree I'm looking for a stereotype but I want an "authentic" stereotype. Most people have come to associate the image of a witchfinder with certain things; dark cloaks, pistols, buff coats and the characteristic puritan hat. All period trappings but worn together they create the look. There simply aren't many minis out there which fit that description, most of them have cavalier style hats for instance and soldiers don't tend to wear cloaks on the battlefield. What I'm after is something authentic but which immediately suggests that he's a witchfinder rather than just another cavalier or country gent.

To be honest, by looking for a "suitable" model and not one of the "Fantasy" types that already exist, you are looking for your own ideal. That in itself is a "Fantasy" or characature. In reality a Witchfinder of the stated period would be a normal person with leadership quality and detrermination. Other than that he would be no different in appearance to any other man. Of course, he would have a particular standing in life that would give him the authority or opportunity to carry out his duties as a Witchfinder. He may, therefore, wear a certain quality of clothing which is likely more in keeping with an officer class or gentlemanly status.
What I am saying is that without going for one of the suggested "Fantasy" sculpts you should be looking at the regular figures available from the likes of Warlord or Redoubt or even Foundry. Warlord's Fire and Brimstone set isn't bad. The Lord Leven figure would be good, as would Count Tilly,Earl of Essex and The Marquis of Montrose might be suitable. However, the Wallenstein figure has a look of the late, great Vincent Price about him! Take a look.
Having a figure sculpted and cast is expensive. Especially if you aren't going to sell many. I have a friend who has a game and figure range who told me how expensive it is when we asked him about organising a figure for club members. A lot more than companies like Warlord sell them for. Would Eric be able to sell enough to make it worth while? Quite a risk for him, I'm afraid. |

Cheers for the suggestions guys but that's entirely my point, there are a fair few "almost" suitable models out there but pretty much all of them are either vastly expensive and hard to get hold of singly, covered in MOAR SKULLZ!!!1!!™ and too many fantasy elements or just plain rubbish.
Unless someone wants to sculpt me a model of Grotbags then I'm fine with my Rapier witches which are pretty much perfect as Clive mentioned but there's a distinct lack of "historically accurate" Witchfinders and Vampire types.
If you're only going to have a handful of models in a game then "almost" isn't good enough in my book

That is the problem I have found. Most of the vampire minis are more gothic than 17th C. My answe has been to use a 17th C gentleman and lady (Redoubt). They look pretty normal in the metal but my intention is to vamp them up (a bit) in the paint job. The should be able to pass for normal folk most of the time.
I think that decent witches are the biggest need.

Slightly "fantastic", but a very nice sculpt, IMHO.
I like the Foundry vampires, better in the metal than they look on their website, especially the nosferatu and the male "Count" vampire - more "classic" vampire. The Heresy Schubert is good, too, but just more "warlike", i.e. not quite so Gothic. BTW, I have some of the Rapier "classic" witches (i.e. not in sidecars, etc): nice, neat casts - maybe they might be interested ... ? |
