We had a really good game with this encounter this afternoon, not least because it went to the full six turns and I won on foraging points, if not on the body count, but also despite the fact that I excelled even myself at dismal dice rolling -throwing six '1's in succession. A few questions came up:

Could cows be counted as cover if a figure is behind it to the firer?

What does a figure who's lost Self Control do with the forage he has control of? Does he drop it, leave it (i.e does he lose it), or still hang on to it?

Could a figure in control of forage initiate fisticuffs? And if so, what does he do with the forage? Drop it, lose it (if on legs)?

Similarly, if a figure with forage is attacked in Fisticuffs, what happens to his forage (animal, vegatable or mineral)?

What should a figure do when he has liberated some forage? See it off the board and return? Take it to a holding area? It's up to the player?

Does 'in the bag'literally mean 'put in a bag'? That is, for example, could a dragoon with bagged forage put the creatures in his saddlebags and ride off?

Many thanks

Cheers again, Black Sheep, for the thorough answers. Now that we've got the swing of the rules we are really enjoying the games and looking forward to the next encounter.

We're also looking forward to The Supplement. You mentioned something earlier about the use of targes. We've had a couple of run-throughs and think, probably, a +1 on defence in the open would be enough for a figure with a targe. A shield behind a low wall seems just to be doubling up on cover, rather than enhancing defence. A shield in the open is like having your own bit of portable wall to cover you ( as in shield-wall?).

Thanks again.

Hello Drusty, once again really good questions - thanks for posting them .

Could cows be counted as cover if a figure is behind it to the firer? Yes – a cow could act as sturdy terrain if it does not actually block the firer’s line of site. If the figure passes the avoid harm roll then perhaps the cow has been shot instead (roll on the shot injury chart). Sadly this could, for example, quite upset the clubman who was trying to defend his cattle from a raiding party when he accidently kills one of his own precious livestock.

What does a figure who's lost Self Control do with the forage he has control of? Does he drop it, leave it (i.e does he lose it), or still hang on to it? If the figure is literally carrying fairly light ‘bagged’ forage he can scarper with it. If he has ‘roped it’ (e.g. horse or cow) then he will scarper without it. Heavy items like sacks of grain, weapons crates and barrels of beer will be dropped too. A patrol that fails an ‘All Is Lost Roll’ in Encounter 2 loses half of their foraging points (rounding up).

Could a figure in control of forage initiate fisticuffs? And if so, what does he do with the forage? Drop it, lose it (if on legs)? Yes – a figure could initiate fisticuffs. At present we allow figures with light ‘bagged forage’ to fight as normal and figures with ‘a roped’ animal to keep control of the beast if they win the fight. Heavy items, including bags of grain and vegetables, are dropped during fisticuffs and the figure must win the fight and pick them up again.

Similarly, if a figure with forage is attacked in Fisticuffs, what happens to his forage (animal, vegatable or mineral)? Same principles as above.

What should a figure do when he has liberated some forage? See it off the board and return? Take it to a holding area? It's up to the player? Encounter 2 is really designed for players to forage and see off the enemy. We don’t use a drop off points in Encounter 2 (like the barguests and noctelinger have for their captives in Encounter 1) although animals can be tethered and players often create on board ‘holding areas’ to defend them. In raiding type encounters (one will be in the supplement) empty wagons can be waiting nearby to be filled and figures can drop off their stolen supplies, prisoners and livestock then return to the battle.

Does 'in the bag'literally mean 'put in a bag'? That is, for example, could a dragoon with bagged forage put the creatures in his saddlebags and ride off? The term bag is meant to convey the notion of a figure carrying their forage on their person, either literally in a bag, down their shirt or over their shoulder. A dragoon could certainly put such items on his horse or in saddlebags and ride off.

I hope that answers your questions Drusty - please do post again if you want more information. I am off out now to do a bit of wargaming.
Time for me to throw some '1's' no doubt.
