I've just read through the rules ( it was hard to put them down)and think they're great. They've potential for all kinds of games set around the Pike and Shot era, if not later. But I'm also struck by how clearly expressed and grammatically correct they are. It just goes to show what you can do with a good proof reader. And it's indicative that, where most rules writers haven't a clue when it comes to a proof reader, you've had to go to Spain to find one of worth.

But I have a question: For the Self-Control Test (p44) and manoeuvre on foot (p56) dismounted Cavalry and Dragoons have the same rating as Trained Common Folk (T); but for Fisticuffs: Attack and Defend (p28) they have the Common Folk Veteran (V) rating. Is this intentional or a typo?

Also, a quick reference sheet would be handy, and would save me having to crack the spine of the book to photograph various charts.

Oh, and as for vaccum cleaners -the wife recommends an AEG Nimble.

Yeah, I kinda picked up on all that with the Warlord rulesets. I think Witchfinder General has one advantage there: unless I'm mistaken, an average game of WG should go much quicker than a typical BP or HC game, making the "swap and replay" paradigm more feasible.

Great! I prefer this sort of play. I did miss that bit, though. It means that scenario specific rules drive things. Unfortunately, a lot of people like points systems and don't seem able to play without them. There were some heated debates about them when Warlord released Black Powder and Hail Caesar.

Another quick question about the rules. Unless I've missed it, I haven't notice any sort of points costs for building your forces. There are so many different types and classes that a player could become unscrupulous and field an elite force that could spoil a game. Of course, it is different when playing scenarios, or a series of them where casualties affect the forces in the next game, but for pick up games, points might be necessary. Was this just an omission or intentional, or have I just missed it?

According to the "more info" page on the website, points values were deliberately omitted to encourage scenario-type play. The assumption is that any specific scenario will be played through twice, with the players swapping forces the second time around.

Well, you're obviously wrong, then. It cost me £15 to get this fine tome!

Yes, keep up the good work.

Sorry to add to it, but perhaps your response to Drusty should be converted into a FAQ pdf file.

By the way, if we Yorkshiremen can't support one another then there's no hope for the rest!

We are on it Big Al. Thanks for your support on the Warlord Games forum too. I must now honour a covenant made with my daughter (and our youngest play tester) and put myself at the mercy of the X-Factor
Have a good weekend

Thanks for your question Drusty.
We wanted to try and reflect the unique roles of both cavalry and dragoons used in the game. To do this we have given them a mixture of trained and veteran abilities.
We did intend to make them ‘feel’ a bit braver (better self control) when they are mounted and a little less courageous when on foot. That is why, when dismounted, cavalry and dragoons are only classed as trained on page 44’s Self-Control chart.
We should have added this information to the summary of their abilities, as given on page 56, to make this completely clear. Sorry about that.
With the exception of Angry Villager, all other Common Folk on foot (ordinary, veteran and trained) should hopefully have the same potential manoeuvre distances.
On reading page 56 again I now realise it would have been more helpful if we had just written “Cavalry and Dragoons on foot have the same manoeuvre distances as Common Folk”.
Page 28. To make cavalrymen relatively adept at close combat we gave them veteran fisticuffs abilities when mounted and on foot. As dragoons were perhaps not as skilled in the saddle they only have the trained fisticuffs ability when mounted. However, when he has both feet on the ground, a dragoon does do better in a punch up (fisticuffs veteran). What do you think?
I am afraid there is a typo on page 102 . On the list for Blinder forces used in Encounter 6 it should state veteran Captain – not veteran Stickler (it would take a really evil pie to create a Blinder Stickler!)
I will convey your comments about the proof reading to Pablo, thank you. Pablo did a really great job in managing to translate the poor grammar & strange ramblings of a Yorkshireman into legible written English.
Please also thank your wife for the advice about the vaccum cleaner – my Mrs says thanks too. This could lead to a new forum topic.
I will complete and add the free reference chart to download asap. If this chart does not meet your gaming requirements please do let me know. Have a good weekend.
